First stage of Millennium Mills redevelopment is complete, with plans to have it up and running by 2018.

Millennium Mills in Silvertown, London, stands 10 storeys high and spans 450,000 square feet – making the operation the largest asbestos removal carried out in the UK to date using the modern methods.

The work was carried out by asbestos removal specialists Rhodar over 10 months, and involved the removal of more than 500 tonnes of blasting media – the equivalent of 40 double decker buses. It took 55 men nine months to remove it.

Developer Silvertown Partnership said ridding the former flour mill of asbestos contamination was the first step towards the restoration of Millennium Mills, which will be brought back to life to become a hub for business start-ups, innovators and accelerators.

Simon Webster, CEO at the Silvertown Partnership, said: “Millennium Mills is an iconic building with a rich heritage and history. We’re proud to give it a new lease of life through a sensitive restoration.

“Once complete, the building will be restored to retain its art deco frontage, high ceilings and industrial charm. The completion of this huge asbestos removal job is the first step in the journey towards this.”
