Early mesothelioma symptoms

Mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, many people aren’t even aware that they have it. Mesothelioma symptoms are very subtle at the beginning and can go unnoticed. Some people experience no symptoms at all and this can lead to being undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for several years.

Pleural Mesothelioma

The very early stages of pleural mesothelioma generally do not cause many symptoms.

Once symptoms do start they usually are:-

  • Breathlessness
  • A persistent cough
  • Weight loss
  • Pains in the lower back or the side of the chest. The pains are caused by a build up of fluid between the two layers of the pleura surrounding the lung. This is known as a pleural effusion.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Once symptoms do start they usually are:-

  • Pain in the abdomen (tummy)
  • Swelling in the abdomen resulting from the accumulation of fluid (ascites).
  • Feeling or being sick
  • Poor appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Diarrhoea or constipation

The above symptoms are all more likely to be caused by an illness other than mesothelioma however if you have these symptoms you should arrange to  see your doctor. This is particularly important if you have been exposed to asbestos in the past.

“Thank you to Steven [Evans] for his kindness, patience, efficiency and professionalism throughout this process.  I didn’t think my dad would cope well with the requirements but Steven’s calm nature and knowledge made a fairly grim situation much easier to bear.  We contacted other solicitors at the start of this process, and their hard-sell approach was dreadful – thank goodness for you and your team!”
