The Environment and Health Atlas for England and Wales show that the highest risks for mesothelioma incidence are in industrial regions of England and Wales. Illustrated with interactive maps, incidence rates are especially high in areas with previous and current shipbuilding industries.

Occupational and para-occupational exposure to asbestos is the major cause of mesothelioma in the UK, with the occupation at highest risk being construction work. Para-occupational exposures affect household members of the occupationally exposed worker. For example, a household member may have been exposed to asbestos through the worker’s contaminated clothing.

By selecting a town or region you can see the relative risk of mesothelioma for both men and women and compare the risk with other areas of the UK.
