Anti asbestos activists from around the world met in Turin, Italy, in March to campaign against the hazards of asbestos and to call for a world wide ban.

The substance which can cause mesothelioma, lung cancer and other conditions may not appear for 20 years or more from the date exposure.

Asbestos is still being used in many developing countries including India despite its dangers being well recognised.

The meeting in Turin was in response to a large class action being brought by more than 2000 Italians who where exposed to asbestos whilst working for a construction company.

Turin prosecutors say the trial in Turin is the biggest ever held on the effects of exposure to blue asbestos, a mineral banned in Italy in 1992.  The victims are seeking hundreds of millions worth of euros in compensation.
