The Damages (Asbestos-Related Conditions) Bill passed through its committee stage this week. The Private Members’ Bill, presented by Andrew Dismore MP, would overturn the House of Lords judgment in the Johnston case, and enable people with pleural plaques in England and Wales to claim compensation.

The Government usually puts forward amendments to members’ Bills at this stage, but as it is not certain of its position on pleural plaques, no amendments were suggested.

Justice minister Bridget Prentice MP said the Government would publish a response to its plaques consultation before summer recess, which starts on 21 July.
